The audit log records the events that matter for accountability: commits, uploads, downloads, access grants and denials, and membership changes. Filter it by project, member, and event type, and export it when somebody needs it in a spreadsheet.
Most teams never need this. The ones who do usually need it suddenly — a publisher's security review, an NDA question about who accessed a restricted edition, or working out how a file came to be deleted.
